This is the most interesting comparison in the category, because the two platforms disagree about something more fundamental than features.

The short answer

Ghost is software you can own. beehiiv is a growth machine you rent.

Ghost is open source. You can download it, run it on your own server, and pay nobody anything, forever. beehiiv cannot be self-hosted at any price. If independence is the point, the comparison is already over.

If reach is the point, it goes the other way, and not narrowly.

The money

Ghost takes 0% of your membership revenue — you pay Stripe and nothing else. That’s true on Ghost(Pro) and true when you self-host.

Ghost(Pro), the managed hosting, starts at $18/month for 1,000 members on Starter, with paid subscriptions arriving on Publisher at $29/month, also 1,000 members. Business is $199/month for 10,000. Self-hosting costs whatever your server costs — realistically $5–20/month plus your time.

beehiiv: free to 2,500 subscribers, $43/month on Scale to 100,000, and also a 0% take rate on paid subscriptions from Scale up.

At small list sizes Ghost(Pro) is cheaper. At 10,000 members Ghost(Pro) wants $199/month and beehiiv still wants $43 — the ceilings are what separate them, not the entry price. Self-hosted Ghost beats both on cost and loses on everything you’d rather not do yourself.

What Ghost does better

What beehiiv does better

The question that decides it

Ask what your bottleneck actually is.

If it’s audience — you need more readers and more sponsors — beehiiv has machinery pointed directly at that, and Ghost expects you to bring your own. If it’s control — you want to own your platform, shape every pixel, and never hand anyone a percentage or a dependency — Ghost is the only one of the two that offers it, and beehiiv can’t be argued into it.

Cost is a smaller part of this decision than it looks. A self-hosted Ghost is nearly free and will cost you a weekend a year in maintenance; whether that’s a bargain depends on what your weekends are worth.

Where each one wins

Choose Ghost if you want to own your stack, you’re technical or happy to be, your site matters as much as your emails, or a 0% take rate at the cheapest tier is the deciding factor.

Choose beehiiv if you want sponsors without selling, you want growth loops running while you sleep, your list is heading past 10,000, or you’d rather write than administer a server.
