Building a newsletter stopped being about sending emails a while ago.
You need to write the thing, grow an audience, understand what’s working, put a brand around it and eventually make money from it. Do that with separate tools and you’re paying five bills and reconciling four dashboards before you’ve written a word.
beehiiv’s pitch is that all of it lives in one place. Here’s what that actually means in 2026, with the parts worth knowing before you commit.
🤖 AI that lives in the editor
The most immediate difference is that the AI is in the post editor rather than in another tab.
beehiiv’s writing assistant will draft from a prompt, rewrite what you’ve got, shorten or extend a passage, and change the tone — you describe the output you want, set a length and a register, and it works on the text in place. There’s an AI image generator for headers and section dividers, and a translator that handles the major languages natively inside the editor rather than through a duplicate workflow.
The practical effect isn’t that AI writes your newsletter. It’s that the twenty small friction points — a headline that won’t land, a paragraph that’s forty words too long, a header image you don’t have — stop being reasons to not hit send.
One thing the marketing pages don’t lead with: AI requests are rate-limited by plan. Free trial users get 5 a day, Launch 10, Scale 25, Max 50, Enterprise 100. That’s plenty for one newsletter and tight if you’re running several.
📈 Growth tools that are actually the product
This is the part that separates beehiiv from a general email tool, and it’s the reason most people move.
- Referral program — reward subscribers for bringing other subscribers, built in, no third-party app.
- Recommendations — other newsletters recommend yours and you recommend theirs. This is a real growth channel, not a widget.
- Subscribe forms, pop-ups and magic links for capturing readers wherever they find you.
- A no-code website builder, so your archive is a real site with post pages search engines can index. Your back catalogue becomes a traffic source instead of a dead inbox.
- Automations, including click-triggered ones on the higher plans, for onboarding sequences and re-engagement.
Most email platforms give you forms and hope you have traffic already. beehiiv gives you loops that compound.
💰 Six ways to make money from it
Once there’s an audience, beehiiv wants to be where you monetise it rather than a place you export from:
- Paid subscriptions — with a 0% take rate on Scale and above, which is the number to compare against Substack’s 10%.
- The Ad Network — beehiiv matches sponsors to newsletters, so you can carry ads without a sales team.
- Sponsorship storefront and direct sponsorships for deals you close yourself.
- Digital products — guides, courses, appointments.
- Community features for paid membership around the newsletter.
You will not use all six. The point is that you don’t have to bolt on Stripe, a course platform and an ad broker to try any of them.
📊 Analytics that answer a question
Publishing consistently is necessary and not sufficient. beehiiv reports on subscriber growth, traffic sources, conversions, engagement and revenue, with A/B testing, segmentation, polls, surveys and verified click tracking behind it.
The useful framing: the analytics are there to tell you which acquisition channel is worth more of your time, and which posts are worth writing more of. Everything else is vanity.
🆚 How it compares, feature by feature
beehiiv publishes its own matrix against the platforms creators actually weigh it against — Substack, Mailchimp, Kit (formerly ConvertKit), MailerLite and ActiveCampaign, left to right after the beehiiv column:

Read it for what it is: a vendor’s own chart, on which the vendor wins every single row. That doesn’t make it wrong — it makes it selective. The rows worth taking at face value are the structural ones, because they’re easy to verify and expensive to fake:
- Recommendations and an SEO-optimised web archive. Genuinely uncommon outside beehiiv and Substack, and the two features most responsible for growth that happens without you.
- No-fee premium subscriptions. beehiiv’s 0% take rate on Scale and above, against Substack’s 10%. On $2,000/month of subscription revenue that’s $200 a month of difference.
- Content paywalls and subscriber polls built in rather than assembled from three integrations.
Discount the soft rows. “Advanced analytics dashboard” is a judgement call rather than a feature flag, and Mailchimp, Kit and MailerLite would all contest their crosses. “Unlimited email sends” depends entirely on which plan you’re on — MailerLite’s free tier caps at 2,500 emails a month, as its own pricing page says. A chart like this tells you what a vendor thinks its strengths are. That’s useful information; it just isn’t a review.
💵 What it costs
Verified against beehiiv’s own pricing page in August 2026:
| Plan | Price | Subscribers |
|---|---|---|
| Launch | Free | Up to 2,500 |
| Scale | $43/month ($517/year) | Up to 100,000 |
| Max | $96/month ($1,151/year) | Up to 100,000 |
Two things worth noticing. The free plan carries 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends, which is unusually high — most platforms cap the free tier an order of magnitude lower. And the paid plans are flat to 100,000 subscribers rather than banded, so the per-subscriber cost falls off a cliff as you grow. beehiiv is expensive to start and cheap to scale.
Scale is the plan most people actually want: it’s where the Ad Network, the 0% subscription take rate, digital products, community and automations switch on.
⚖️ Where beehiiv is the wrong choice
Worth saying plainly, because a recommendation that has no downside isn’t a recommendation.
- You’re selling products, not attention. If the newsletter’s job is to move people toward a store, a tool with deep e-commerce tagging serves you better. Try beehiiv vs MailerLite for that comparison.
- Your list is tiny and staying tiny. At a few hundred subscribers with no growth ambition, $43/month buys you machinery you won’t run.
- You haven’t published four issues yet. The platform is not what’s stopping you.
🤔 Is beehiiv worth it?
Short version: yes if you intend to use the growth and money machinery, no if you only want to send email.
beehiiv at $43/month is expensive as a way to email 800 people. The same $43 is cheap for a newsletter running referrals, carrying Ad Network sponsorships, taking paid subscriptions at a 0% take rate and holding 40,000 subscribers on a bill that hasn’t moved since it had 5,000. Same price, completely different value, and the difference is entirely about whether you switch the machinery on.
The honest test is a question about you, not the product: are you going to run a referral campaign in the next month? If yes, beehiiv earns its price quickly. If you’re not sure, take the free Launch plan to 2,500 subscribers and decide later — that’s a real option, not a consolation prize.
Compared with the obvious alternatives: Substack is cheaper until you earn about $430/month, then its 10% cut overtakes beehiiv’s rent and never stops. Kit is free to 10,000 subscribers and better if you sell your own products. Ghost is the one you can own outright. MailerLite is cheaper at small list sizes and better wired into a store.
🎁 The offer
If you’re starting or moving a newsletter, this is a good moment to test it properly.
Get a 14-day free trial, then 20% off for your first 3 months when you sign up through our link. No code to enter — the discount is carried by the link and applied at checkout.
The offer in full · beehiiv’s pricing, plan by plan
That’s roughly two and a half months at a reduced bill: long enough to import a list, run a referral campaign and find out whether the growth loops move anything for you. Which is the only question worth answering, and an expensive one to answer at full price.
It’s an affiliate link. It costs you nothing extra, it’s what applies the discount, and it pays us if you stay.
Final thought
If you want one place that handles publishing, AI-assisted writing, a website, audience growth, analytics, automation and monetisation, beehiiv is the strongest all-in-one option for creators right now — and the free plan is generous enough that finding out costs you nothing.
Start small. Publish consistently. The tools only matter once there’s something to put in them.
